The Earth Prize Legacy

The Earth Prize Legacy

Originally, The Earth Prize was conceived and organized by the World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC) Network in collaboration with the Municipality of Luino on Lake Maggiore. The WEEC is the largest international congress addressing education for environment and sustainable development worldwide, and its network brings together environmental education actors from all over the world to share knowledge and best practices.

From 2018 to 2020, the goal of the WEEC Earth Prize International was to recognize individuals, organizations, and projects that aimed to protect and enhance landscapes and environmental resources while considering the impacts of climate change. The WEEC Earth Prize recognized those who contributed their ideas, actions or innovations to drive the transition towards a sustainable lifestyle.

At the end of 2020, The Earth Foundation pledged to carry on the WEEC’s legacy, transforming The Earth Prize into a $100,000 global environmental sustainability competition for students between the ages of 13 and 19 years. The competition seeks now to inspire, educate and empower young students to become sustainability change-makers and to reward participants with the best solutions to tackle environmental challenges.

The Earth Prize will reward the winning solution
with a $100,000 prize and the three runner-up
solutions with a $12,500 prize each.

The Earth Prize will also reward a teacher with The Earth Prize Educator of the Year award and a $5,000 prize.

Following the legacy of the original award, every year WEEC’s Secretary-General, Professor Mario Salomone, will select a teacher who has made an exceptional contribution to education during the competition, whom The Earth Foundation will recognize with The Earth Prize Educator of the Year Award and a $5,000 prize. The Earth Prize will also reward the three most engaged Mentors with The Earth Prize Mentor of the Year awards and a $2,500 prize each.
